Last Night

Last Night,
originally uploaded by West Lancs Scouts.

Sunday evening …

It’s the last night here in Iceland… everyone eventually arrived here yesterday even after the Kayak team plane had been delayed over 4 hours at Korusuk in Greenlnd.

The bigger part of our Expedition spent the night in Rejivik ..there has been a music festival on … lots of celebration and I think a little drink … well it has been 5 weeks.

Most of us have been on the Golden Circle coach tour today taking in the major sites of Iceland..

We’ll be home tomorrow !!!!!!!

This will be the last ‘live’ news output….

It’s been a privilege bringing you news via this Web page

Elegant Finish

The Elegant Finish (AKA Over the Top)
Tim, Sean, Andy D, Rob A.

A small team had gathered for one last adventure.  The plan is to explore a new area and another route between base camp and the sea.  The route took us, via Watchtower Glacier, over the ice cap and down Apu Glacier, which meets the Edward Bailey Glacier near the beach.  To give us more time for the unexpected, we set off on Sunday 12th, a day before the helicopter arrived and everyone else departed base camp.

Traveling light, we soon made our way up to the right hand glacier just below ski camp. Plodding on in the cool evening sun, Sean certainly felt his dinner repeating and Tim suffered from a bout of slow-leg-syndrome, nevertheless we hit the ice cap with ease.  Poor navigation led to a short descent into the wrong glacier, identified by rapidly approaching cliffs, which should have taken hours to arrive at, so a hasty change of direction led us down the correct route.  Soon enough we were on our path of no return into the unknown glacier!

Crossing crevasses and occasionally sinking in soft snow, we made good progress toward the known difficulties – an icefall near the bottom.  Meeting the huge glacier, coming from the left, we found more ski-able terrain at shallow angle and pleasant walking in or out of the sun.  However, after 11 hours, in the heat of the day we decided to bivvi and recuperate for the interesting section.  As usual, sleep-monster Rob jumped straight into his bag and didn’t stop for breakfast/ dinner/ whatever meal we were on.  Meanwhile, the others tended to their feet wounds and fed-up for a doze in the sun.

Starting again at 9pm, we set off on our descent, roped up and ready to discover what lay ahead.  Soon we found crevasses and moraine intermingled and complicated.  Dead ends on the left forced us right, until we could see more of the glaciers joining from the left.  Although they brought more ice and choss, one significant glacier was entirely covered in rock and gave a deep silty moraine line to follow – if only we could get over to it.  A steady pace led us over to the left and we extended our rope to allow us to access the moraine without kicking rocks down onto each other.  On top, the soft moraine made walking easier, if more unstable and great care was taken not to dislodge large rocks with foot or rope.  The moraine did steadily disappear into crevasses on the right and the walk-able ledge narrowed to a shallow point, from which we feared we wouldn’t be able to reach the glacier. Perseverance proved to be the name of the game and at the very end we made it down a short scree run to the safety (!?) of ice.

The ice fall appeared to be over, but a large expanse of glacier lay ahead and we all begged privately for the easiest route, so Tim made the call to head toward the inside corner of the glacier, where we believed Dick had described a moraine motorway.  Unfortunately, it took time to get there and on arrival we found ourselves at the top of a 200m ice cliff, dropping vertically onto the glacier below.  We beat a hasty retreat and took the pessimistic route into the middle of the glacier, seeking an easier line for tired and sore feet.  Although it was difficult to see, the glacier did yield a way through and soon we were down to the flat, if not level ground with 12km still to go!

Choosing the most direct line to the beach, we hoped to avoid unnecessary mileage, but soon found that large rivers made our route undulating to say the least.  Each time we looked around, it appeared that as many rivers lay between us and the “motorway’ as lay ahead in our original route, so we carried on.  Up and down, if not round and round, we headed through a maze of streams, pools and valleys before rounding the corner and onto the home stretch.  Hugging the inside corner again, we found opportunities to cross the river we remembered at an easier position.  Having crossed, we found ourselves forced into a narrow gorge between rock and ice and over a river (gurgling below ice blocks that had fallen from the glacier).

The narrow gorge relented with easier ground on the left and smooth slabs led us onto the pebbly beach and a short way from Tim’s Armagnac stash. Finally arriving at the rendezvous point, to great relief, we find few signs of life in the two tents already erected.  Later we discover that Team Medding’s arrived 4 hours earlier and immediately went to sleep, hence making our leisurely approach and following rest a much more fitting and elegant end to the final exploration of the expedition.

Kayak Walk Out

Kayak Walk Out,
originally uploaded by West Lancs Scouts.

Kayak team- Phase 2: Stuart Dean, Phil Haworth, Ray Hardman, Claire Charlton, Joe Ashworth, Phil Acklam, Moira Mason, Harriet Kilgallen, Nic Evans, Sam Ashworth.

WALK OUT (DAY 1)
Left Basecamp at 1pm, all knowing full well what was ahead. Just say ‘terminal moraine’ to anyone and they’ll develop a nervous problem. Harriet’s sack weighed just marginally more than Harriet herself, and Nic’s sack weighed nothing because everyone else was carrying his stuff because of his knee injury. After making good progress on the ice, we hit the moraine and it wasn’t too long before Ray Hardman was having a thoroughly enjoyable time, dreaming up punishments to give Joe who was following waypoints from his trusty ‘Depress-O-Meter’ (GPS). Sprung walking poles, rectums using them to pogo across the next section was mentioned as an option. We reached the Gobi Desert with woops and cheers and bivvied for the night.

WALK OUT (DAY 2)
The Gobi Desert crossing confirmed anyone’s doubts about taking a desert trekking holiday as we encountered sinking sand and enough river crossings for even the most hardened paddler. Eventually we reached ‘Mini-Mart Glacier’ (Tesco food supplies are on the other side!), followed by yet more swimming with rucksacks and lead boots. We reached the home stretch to the beach where a full set of kayaks (phew!) were waiting for us, as well as food barrels and yet more weekly goody bags.

DAY 3
Everyone was in summer holiday mode today as the sun, sea and blue skies collided at the end of the fjord. Several thousand brews ensued whilst the paddling gear dried and ‘Master Baker’ Sam Ashworth got to work creating his bread masterpiece. Everyone was issued with kit and after a minor welly-shortage drama we were ready to start on ‘paddler time’ (7am!) in the morning. Sam’s bread creation went down well as we all scoffed it with jam as if we’d never seen bread and jam before.

PADDLING DAY 1
Up at 7am, and after packing up were away for 9:30, battling only minor pack-ice down the fjord. The end looked to be only half an hour away but seemed to take forever. At the end a good second breakfast fuelled the crossing from Skillebugt to the Bear Islands and camp. The site was recced by the first phase paddlers who struck across a freshwater lake to wash in. Impressively, the most strokes managed were 14 by Phil Haworth, and although we were impressed at his bravery, we all agreed that he must also be a little bit stupid. (It was pretty chuffing cold). Map planning for the rest of the trip and a fire of measly arctic willow twigs saw the evening out.

PADDLING DAY 2
Up at 7 again and away for 9. The fog came down as we paddled to Fangsthus hut which turned out to be little more than a pile of planks and a few rusty nails. We returned after a second breakfast to the boats to find the tide had come in a little and Phil Acklam’s boat sailing away of its own accord. Another hour or so saw us to the sunny climes of Picnic Island for lunch and forty winks. It really is tough this paddling lark. We spent the rest of the afternoon exploring the bear islands coastlines before stopping to camp late afternoon. Joe cut his finger whilst preparing his cheese course and Ray sprung into first-aid action. The red wooly protective glove gave Joe an image not unlike Michael Jackson, especially as accompanied by cries of ‘Ow!’ A good fire fuelled by the planks of Fangsthus hut and a bottle of Jamesons saw the evening out.

Second Paddle Day 3

A day of zigzags and hook dangling. The final full days paddle started in a breeze, wise heads conferred to decide the best strategy. The sages decided to cross the fjord to the Milne Land side. So off we went! The wind dropped and the wise heads conferred again, and low and behold it was back to the Bear islands for a snack. Once we set off again the poor misguided fools who are that way inclined dangled there tackle in the water. As always they paddled slowly and caught nowt. The final camp provided the opportunity for bread and cookies to be baked but no fish to fry ( What a surprise!)

Kayak Day 4 Supplemental
Pack Ice

After a fast boat ride of 110km in 3.5 hours the Inuit speed boats came to a stop in thick pack ice. This was to be the end of our ride, as we were told the ice was too thick to get up Hurry Fjord. We went slowly to shore and were dumped on a small beach to start the paddle up to Constablpynt.
The boat ride had been quite enjoyable and eventful after 4 days paddling. At 50+ km/h the wind chill had made the journey very cold and the few stops we had to refuel had been very useful to allow the final 7 kayakers to warm up. Our last stop was to try and catch Inuit tea. A seal had dared to show its head, which resulted in the sky being filled with lead. Fortunately for the seal none of the shots were accurate enough and it managed to escape.
After a short break on the beach to have lunch and to warm up we loaded up the kayaks and set off for CP. Phil H had phoned the AA for directions through the ice so we expected to going to be good. The first 200 metres of the journey went OK, then the fun started. The small “leads” (channels) started to close and tricky route finding started weaving in and out in an attempt to make progress. My thoughts turned to Shackleton and wondering if like him, myself and Phil and our “Tankers” size double kayak would end up trapped in the like. It’s quite something to see a small iceberg weighing more than100 times you and your boat bearing towards you. Its only thought was to try and crash into the iceberg on the other side of us. If doesn’t actual care if you’re in the way or not.
Claire meanwhile kept hunting for that illusive route through the ice. Just short of 2 hours after starting we made it back to a small beach for a brief (mental) rest. We had made just 1.9km progress.
A new plan was hatched. We would follow close to the beach, where there should be some leads. Apparently, icebergs don’t like beaches. The plan came good and 15 mins later we had made another 500 metres. We’d reached the end of the cliffs and found a hunters hut (Fungsthus). This would be our camp for the night, and a well earned rest after a mighty paddle of 2.4km. Only another 30km to go to CP, with more pack ice tomorrow. YIPPEE!!!.

Second Trip Day 4 Melancholy

A morning of big skies and a time for reflection on a long trip. For Stu, Phil, Clare and Ray the last day of a trip which had started at Constable Pynt and finished in Milne Land via a short break on the glacier. A total of around 300km. This was something special to think about and to reflect on.
This was to be the shortest day of the trip with a planned landing at around lunchtime to meet with the rest of the expedition who had arrived by powerboat after making waves for us to bounce along on as they passed. We arrived in formation singing loudly and made a grand entrance to the beach all landing at once to be greeted by a small party. Then unusually we were asked to move some barrels (no surprise there) and paddle the boats over to the airstrip for transferring equipment as we had been told that we would be leaving immediately for Constable Pynt or as close as they could get us…
